Library Instruction and Information Literacy:
Learning Tools for Students

Improving your research skills can help you save time and improve your grades. Here are some tools you can use to learn more about using the library and other information sources.

Immediate Help

If you need immediate help with a project, visit the Reference Desk of any library. Reference assistance is also available by telephone for brief answers and problems with access to library resources.

If you have a question after hours, or if you can't get to the library, check out our Ask a Librarian service. Be aware, though, that it takes 24-48 hours to get an answer, and longer on weekends and holidays.

If you need extended help with a project, request an individual consultation with a specialist in your subject. To request a consultation, visit the Reference Desk of any library, or call or send e-mail to the librarian responsible for collections in your field.

Online Tutorials

Take our online tutorials and let the computer teach you some essential moves for organizing research, getting the most out of electronic databases, and avoiding plagiarism, among other topics.

Additional Research Resources

For brief course-specific library guides, consult the class guides at Camden and Newark.

For online dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other quick-answer sources, go to our extensive list of Electronic Reference Sources.

For pointers on identifying scholarly articles, see Popular Literature vs. Scholarly Peer-Reviewed Literature: What's the Difference?.

For a Web-based bibliographic citation manager, refer to the RefWorks FAQ.
